Much like the last day of a vacation, my excessive awareness of the fact that my time at Hopkins is coming to a close has made it difficult to fully enjoy myself. Instead, whenever I check my calendar, I find myself counting the number of weeks left until graduation — and, six days later, my flight home.I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. There are many benefits to returning home to Long Island after college. I grew up in Huntington, about an hour from Manhattan, and I have a lot of family in the area. For me, going home mea...

Much like the last day of a vacation, my excessive awareness of the fact that my time at Hopkins is coming to a close has made it difficult to fully enjoy myself. Instead, whenever I check my calendar, I find myself counting the number of weeks left until graduation — and, six days later, my flight home.

I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. There are many benefits to returning home to Long Island after college. I grew up in Huntington, about an hour from Manhattan, and I have a lot of family in the area. For me, going home means hanging out by my grandparents’ pool with my sister and cousins; it means going to Rosa’s Pizza with my neighbors; it means curling up on my parents’ orange couch with a book and a cat.

Typically, I indulge in these relaxing activities for a few short, idling weeks before returning to Hopkins for my next semester — but this time will be different. Following my graduation, I have almost nothing planned. I have a doctor’s appointment at the end of May, my dad’s ultimate frisbee tournament in June, my cousin’s wedding in August — and that’s about it.

Logically, I know I’ll benefit from taking a breather — and that I’m incredibly privileged to be able to take one — but slowing down has never been very easy for me. I crave structure, crafting it where it doesn’t already exist, whether I’m challenging myself to read as many books as I can over winter break or signing up for a spring half-marathon, and I don’t know where I’m going to find it once I’m out of school. I’m trying to be grateful for the opportunity to slow down and spend time with family before starting to work full-time, but my own hopes and ambitions — and the pre-professional culture at Hopkins — have made it difficult for me to accept that taking an unstructured break after graduation may be what I need.

Truthfully, I don’t want to be taking a break. I had hoped to be attending graduate school this fall, and, when that didn't work out, I modified my post-grad ambitions accordingly. I tried to get myself excited about the premise of accepting a job, moving somewhere new and starting the next chapter of my life alongside my friends but I haven’t found the right fit yet — and I would rather sit in my discomfort at home for a few weeks or months than accept a job that I know I’ll dislike (as I nearly did).

At a school like Hopkins, where many students follow straightforward, pre-professional trajectories, I’ve been finding it difficult to tell people that I don’t know what’s next for me and that I’m moving home indefinitely. While I know it isn’t true, it often feels like everyone surrounding me has had their next steps fall seamlessly into place, receiving dream offers from jobs, graduate programs, fellowships and the like.

As tricky as it is to prepare to celebrate my graduation in the midst of so much uncertainty, I know that I nevertheless have a lot to be grateful for. I’ve absolutely loved my time at Hopkins — I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had or the relationships I’ve formed here for the world. I believe in myself and my potential, even if it’s going to take me a little longer to figure out what comes next for me.

Every day, I get closer to figuring out what I want my life after college to resemble. There are so many opportunities ahead of me, it’s difficult to choose what path to take — family, friends and professors keep telling me that the world is my oyster — but Long Island is as good a place as any to continue working toward the answer to that question. Besides, if the previous times I’ve spent at home over school breaks have taught me anything, it’s that there’s a lot to enjoy about a Long Island interlude.

HAUPPAUGE, NY — A man who took early retirement from a Manhattan law firm he had worked at for 24 years has thrown himself into volunteerism, helping fight food insecurity while mentoring those younger than him.

Darryl Morris, 59, of East Northport, retired in June 2023. He heard about Long Island Cares from a friend and started volunteering at the Hauppauge pantry in January.

"I’ve noticed over the past few years that there seemed to be more and more people going hungry in this country," Morris told Patch. "Since I was moving back to Long Island, I wanted to help in this area, and after researching pantries, I found that Long Island Cares was doing some amazing things."

Morris said "incredible and caring people" who have a passion for helping people volunteer at Long Island Cares. He draws inspiration from his fellow volunteers, which he said led to his most memorable moment while volunteering at the pantry.

"Some ladies older than me were working so hard that I couldn’t keep up," Morris said. "They were amazing. I had to tell them to slow down so I could catch up. It’s such fun to work with them."

Everyone he volunteers with is "pleasant," which he said caught his attention.

"Nobody wanted to sit still, nor were they constantly looking at their watches, talking, or texting on their phones. They were there to do a job, and they took it seriously."

Morris also volunteers in various areas of his church. He hopes to return to helping teenagers understand how to invest and manage their finances. He had teenagers read the book, "The Millionaire Mind." If they read the book and wrote a report, he said, he would give them $250 per quarter to invest into a stock they were interested in. Even those who did not read the book received $50, which Morris placed in the book. He would also advise them on which stocks may benefit them.

"The book also discusses making good choices, friends, girlfriends, etc.," Morris said.

The weather’s going to be warm and the freshwater fishing should get really good over the next week for bass, perch, and pickerel.”C...

“Me and the little guy went fishing the other day. We had one pickerel and that was about it, but we’re going back today with the nice weather and hopefully we’ll have better action. The weather’s going to be warm and the freshwater fishing should get really good over the next week for bass, perch, and pickerel.”

Capt Joe. From the King Cod out of Captree reported on their Sunday, 2/25 trip:

“Improved fishing today as there seems to be a little bit of life now to the west. 16 keeper Cod, and around a dozen shorts made it over the rail today for a light crowd of 13 anglers. Fish where caught on both bait, and jigs. We will be sailing again on Friday, March 1st, Saturday March 2nd, & Sunday, March 3rd.”

Paul McCain of River Bay Outfitters in Baldwin told me:

“Yellow perch are getting ready to spawn and moving into the shallows, and that action has been fast. If you find the school you can land a dozen in under 10 minutes. The same can be said for White perch in the brackish waters.

Fishing is only going to get better as spring settles in. We’re in that transitional period where it’s going to be a rollercoaster of warm and cold weather. Once the weather ticks up a few degrees, the fish really tend to come alive and bites shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Pickerel have been feeding more aggressively, in contrast to some slower action the past few weeks when it’s been more wintery. Whether on a fly or on spinning tackle, those fish can make for fun aggressive bites this time of year.”

Everybody OK after last night’s wind? Those gusts were so strong I found a few of my neighbor’s roof shingles in the road while walking my dog this morning. If you live more inland you probably didn’t think it was all that crazy, but up on the North shore it was LOUD, and it made my whole house creak. It looks like the recently-restored beaches out East held up to the storm, after the thrashing it took not long ago which eliminated a ton of the beach.

Speaking of beach erosion, this past weekend I joined the Long Island Beach Buggy Association (LIBBA) in their annual Operation Christmas Tree event. Back in January, Christmas trees were donated to be placed in strategic areas to strengthen the dunes. After a few weather delays due to snow, the operation successfully took place and a ton of volunteers showed up to help haul the trees down the beach and place them in their barriers.

The hype is building fast. Back-to-back 50-degree days, and some epic striper fishing footage on the OTW YouTube channel has me super-ready for the spring. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be cleaning the dust off my kayaks and getting them ready to target freshwater species for the better half of March before getting salty once again in the back bay.

I’ll be undertaking my daily ritual of walking a hot thermos of coffee down to the nearest body of water and checking for bait. I’m definitely getting ahead of myself, but if this spring is anything like last year—which the current weather forecast has me thinking it will be—we might be in for an early start again.

As the weather warms up, the freshwater fishing should really turn on. It’s tempting to launch a kayak on one of LI’s lakes this weekend, but remember that water temperatures will be dangerously cold still, so be sure to pack a dry-suit and a PFD if you plan to venture out on the water.

Holdover fishing has seen a noticeable uptick with the weather, and many holdover fishermen are optimistic we’ll have a repeat of last year’s epic Spring and opening week of the striped bass season in NY. It was one of my personal best, and many others back in 2023.

The weekend has some spotty rain in the forecast but pleasant temperatures. I’d encourage anyone to get out and fish if they can. Places like Belmont Lake, Blydenburgh, Argyle Lake, Hempstead Lake, and Twin Lakes can yield perch, stocked trout, bass, and chain pickerel.

My ideal freshwater outfit for most of Long Island’s ponds is 10- to 15-pound braid with 4-pound mono or fluoro leader. If I’m tired of snapping knots, or if I’m fishing a more rocky area, I’ll upsize to 10- to 12-pound leader as necessary.

For lure selection, the most universal choice that can probably catch every fish in one of these lakes is a 1/8-ounce jighead rigged with a 2- to 3-inch soft plastic. Think crappie magnets, keitech easy shiners. Lastly, there’s the old faithful ¼ ounce kastmaster spoon.

Long Island and NYC Fishing Report

Petey Trovato from Lindenhurst Bait and Tackle told me:

“A buddy and I have been nailing yellow perch up to 6 inches with curly tail grubs on 1/8 ounce jigheads. This past weekend on the Connetquot I had a nice brook trout and a couple of smaller rainbows on small nymph flies. The weather had been nice up until this snow came!”

Brandon Weitz from Causeway Bait and Tackle in Wantagh said:

“This Friday 2/16 is the start of our Spring sale – the entire store will be on sale until March 3rd, so be sure to stop in and load up!

Fishing wise, other than stocked trout and freshwater bass, it’s been quiet here at the shop. We have nightcrawlers for bass and panfish, and spoons for trout! They’ve been biting well in the ponds and rivers, so if you’ve got cabin fever fishing the lakes and ponds are your best bet.”

Paul McCain of River Bay Outfitters in Baldwin told me:

“This past weekend was good in the freshwater. My son visited the Croton water system for trout and had a killer day Euro-nymphin for trout, landing 4 beauties. Now however, with all the snow melt, the rivers are going to cool down and its going to take a few days to warm back up, which will definitely affect the bite. In the tidal pools and outflows, there are carp and white perch ready to bite on small streamers or light tackle spinning gear. The warm weather has made for a better bite, but it’s still winter – you gotta be happy with whatever you can get.”

Winter’s back, and it brought the wind. In contrast to the last storm, it wasn’t super cold and more of a slush that accumulated, but once temperatures dropped everything iced up. Some took advantage of their snow day to get out on the water. My buddy Shawn from Cow Harbor B&T hit up the Connetquot River and caught his first ever fly-brookie on the classic wooly bugger. Congrats to him, I wish I’d done the same that day. Fishing during a snowfall is one of life’s simple pleasures.

Skim Ice shouldn’t be a factor for long, but some ponds do have it and it will limit your access in certain places. You might be able to just break it up with a rock or wade past it if you layer up enough. Water temperatures will have definitely taken a dip due to the snow melt and ice.

This week I spoke to our Eastern Long Island Fishing Report author Tim Regan to get the word on the fishing out East. Tim’s been keeping busy in the tidal outflows chasing white perch, carp, and holdover schoolies. Here’s what he told me:

“White perch commandeered my attention on Sunday. They’ve proven ravenous in various brackish waters. Often, the best bites will occur for just a few days. Targeting them consistently is your best bet for a memorable fish. Other species in the mix with them might include gizzard shad, American eels, and stripers.”

Tim added, “Largemouth bass are picky, but they’re chewing pretty regularly. I can count on at least one fish a day if I’m targeting them, but it relies on finding the right lure/presentation and a lot of trial-and-error. All-in-all, it’s definitely worth getting out there daily.”

Similar to Tim, I’m finding that the freshwater bass fishing requires a lot of trial-and-error and cycling through different lures/presentation before you figure out the one that works, and once you do it’s generally 1 to 2 fish per day from whatever pond or lake you’re fishing out of.

Tim and I also discussed carp fishing, which is something I’ve slept on for too long. He told me: “I’m tossing small marabou flies at them for the most part, hoping for an eat. Chum the water with bread if you want the closest thing to guaranteed action. It’s exhilarating getting a topwater bite this way. Plus, that’s one of the toughest local fish fights you can find this time of year.”

Indeed, there are some big carp out there on long island in the creeks and ponds. Check your local pond to see if it has carp and try some of the techniques mentioned by Tim if you have a chance.
