Functional Medicine in Harrison, ME

Have you ever been to a primary care doctor and wondered why they focus on treating symptoms instead of addressing the root cause of your illness? Rather than take a patient-centered approach to address questions like, "Why are you ill?" they prescribe medications that alleviate symptoms but don't do much to solve the underlying issue that's causing you to be sick.

When you have a cough, you're handed a cough suppressant. When you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, you're prescribed a pill that masks the issue. The truth is that this approach only masks symptoms and can even make them exponentially worse. Medication never treats the root cause; your body's dysfunction isn't due to a deficiency of the medication you're taking.

That begs the question: Wouldn't you prefer to deal with the underlying cause of the problem making you feel bad? At Med Matrix, we take a functional approach to medicine instead of simply treating the symptoms our patients have.

We ask questions like:

  • Why is your body making more cholesterol?
  • Why are you obese?
  • Why is your blood pressure higher than ever before?

Top 6 Reasons to Consider Functional Medicine in Harrison, ME

One of the most popular questions we get from new patients at Med Matrix is why they should even consider functional medical services over those at conventional medical centers. We get it - if you've only known the traditional side of medicine, exploring treatment from a functional medical doctor might seem unnecessary or uncomfortable. Before you retreat back into your comfort zone, take these points into consideration.

Comprehensive Treatment Options

Unlike conventional doctors, who must work in a narrow scope of treatment, functional medicine opens the doorway to a wealth of therapies and treatments. For instance, at Med Matrix, when a patient presents with symptoms of depression, we don't simply consider which prescription medication to prescribe.

We thoroughly assess omega-3 levels, vitamin D levels, hormones, thyroid imbalances, gut issues, and inflammatory markers. Our goal is to identify the root cause of your depression. We seek to understand WHY your depression is happening. Some common functional medicine treatment options can include the following:

  • Health Coaching
  • Lifestyle Changes
  • Diet Optimization
  • Holistic Treatments and Therapies
  • Hormone Balancing
  • IV Vitamin Therapy
  • Med Spa Services
  • Peptide Therapy

Healthcare and Wellness Services Catered to You

Functional medicine recognizes that each person is unique, so their treatment should be personalized. We all have different genetics, upbringings, diets, stress levels, and backgrounds. As functional medicine providers, we aim to understand each patient's life story from birth and create a plan that is tailored to them. Common sense says that conversation could take some time, and you'd be correct. An initial consultation with a functional medicine provider from Med Matrix can last an hour or more. But that allows us to provide you with focused, one-on-one attention.

This approach is in stark contrast to an appointment with a primary care physician, which only lasts a few minutes and can make you feel like you're just a number. It's challenging to have a meaningful conversation and provide a comprehensive solution in such a short time. Doctors who practice functional medicine in Harrison, ME, often see fewer patients per day, and for good reason - they're able to devote more time and energy to you, not processing transactions.

Education that Empowers

The primary objective of functional medicine is to equip and empower the patient to take charge of their health and enhance their quality of life. Since you can't visit a Med Matrix doctor every day, it's important that we continue your healing process using guidance provided by your functional medicine provider.

This guidance will cover important topics relating to your individual health, and may include protocols for optimizing your diet, lifestyle, exercise, stress, and supplements intake. We couple that guidance with advanced lab testing, condition diagnosis, and medication management. We understand that can be a lot to process in one or two meetings. As such, we may recommend health coaching and other services to help.

System-Based Treatment Protocols

Functional medicine believes in treating the person, not just the disease or the symptoms. Most conventional medicine models prioritize prescription medications that match up to specific symptoms. In the world of functional medicine, that's a short-sided approach. Instead, providers at Med Matrix take a systems-based approach to care.

For instance, if you're concerned about enduring too much stress, we want to know that's due to inflammation, malfunctioning adrenals, G.I. problems, or something else entirely. To find out, we check the functionality of your kidneys, heart, gut, liver, thyroid, hormones, and even your vitamin D levels. The more we know, the better understanding we have of the systems we need to address.

Uncover the Root Cause

Many people struggle to find answers to their medical conditions because they are passed around from doctor to specialist and back again. This happens frequently. Numerous patients have told us that they were informed, "it's all in your head" and "your labs look normal," despite experiencing severe symptoms indicating that something was wrong.

When you come to Med Matrix for a functional medicine appointment, it's almost like you're hiring a medical detective to uncover the root cause of your symptoms. Our doctors thrive on difficult cases and won't stop investigating until a solution is uncovered.

Cost-Effective Treatment, Long-Lasting Results

Functional medicine goes by many names, such as integrative, holistic, personalized, and preventative. Preventative medicine is the most cost-effective form of healthcare. By preventing or slowing down diseases, you can save future healthcare costs that would have been incurred if a preventative approach wasn't taken.

For instance, let's consider Type II Diabetes. Patients who visit a functional medicine provider are proactive and start addressing blood sugar concerns well before conventional medicine does. Functional medicine providers monitor blood sugar levels even before they reach conventional pre-diabetes levels. When patients are informed and educated about diet and lifestyle before the onset of a disease, much better results are achieved in disease prevention. Once someone has a diagnosis or disease, it becomes more challenging and expensive to correct.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals for Maintaining Your Health

One of the major hallmarks of functional medicine in Harrison, ME, is to stay healthy year-round by eating a healthy diet and exercising. While diet and exercise are crucial for wellness, many Americans don't get the necessary amounts of vitamins and nutrients in their diets. Whether you're working with a health coach or you're simply looking for diet tips, keep these important supplements in mind as you work towards a healthy life.

The claim: Harrison Butker said commencement speech comments were ‘taken out of context’

A May 16 Facebook post (direct link, archive link) shows a photo of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker above a quote attributed to him regarding his controversial commencement speech.

“Everyone is taking what I said out of context. All I said is that we should go back to a better time, like the 50’s & 60’s. When men were men, and women had more babies than thoughts. When the only ‘Me too’ movement was one woman saying she was ready for her 4th child, and another woman agreeing,” the quote reads.

The caption reads in part, "But why would women spend 4 years busting their butts on a degree to wipe noses and cook chicken nuggets?? How dare he think that all women prioritize having children over a career?"

The post was shared more than 80 times in one day, and the same image appeared in other posts on Threads and Facebook.

Butker did not make this comment in regards to his speech. The claim originated on a satirical Facebook page.

Butker’s original comments about women, LGBTQ+ community highly criticized

Butker’s May 11 commencement speech at Benedictine College drew ire when he told female graduates they had been told “diabolical lies“ about the careers they wish to pursue.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” Butker said.

He further said his wife’s life started when she “began living her vocation as a wife and mother.” Butker also criticized the LGBTQ+ community and government policies regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NFL distanced itself from his comments, with senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane stating that Butker’s views “are not those of the NFL as an organization.”

Butker did not, however, follow up on his speech with the quote in the Facebook post. There is no evidence from credible news reports nor his own social media page he made this statement. USA TODAY reached out to his agency for comment but did not receive a response.

A watermark in the image on Butker’s shoulder is the handle of The Sports Memery, which states in its "Intro" section that it posts content that is satire and parody. The Sports Memery posted the quote to its page on May 15, and it was shared more than 13,000 times.

It's an example of what could be called "stolen satire," where posts or stories written as satire and presented that way originally are captured via screenshot and reposted in a way that makes them appear to be legitimate news. As a result, readers of the second-generation post are misled, as was the case here.

USA TODAY reached out to the users who shared the post for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

‘Reminds Me Of Charles Woodson’: Rodney Harrison Drops Lofty Comp On Steelers’ Star Minkah Fitzpatrick

When it comes to the best safeties in the NFL, few find themselves in the same discussion as Pittsburgh Steelers’ star Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Though he had a relatively down season in 2023 due to a number of injuries, including a pulled hamstring, a knee injury, and a broken hand, which sapped some of his production and availability, when Fitzpatrick was healthy and on the field, he was a true game-changer for the Steelers.

That’s been the case since he was traded from the Miami Dolphins in 2019, giving the Steelers that star safety they had been missing on the defense since the heydays of Troy Polamalu. Since putting on the Black and Gold, Fitzpatrick has put himself on a Hall of Fame pace, putting together three First-Team All-Pro seasons and four trips to the Pro Bowl.

He also was the co-leader in interceptions in the NFL in 2022 and earned the Bart Starr Award.

Even despite the tough season in 2023, Fitzpatrick is still highly regarded at the position. In fact, former NFL safety and current NBC Sports analyst Rodney Harrison believes Fitzpatrick is still the best safety in the NFL today, even comparing him favorably to Hall of Famers Charles Woodson and Rod Woodson.

“He can play safety, he can play corner. This is a guy that literally reminds me of Charles Woodson. And I told Charles, I said, ‘I believe that you and Rod Woodson are the two guys that could play every position in the secondary and be an All-Pro.’ And that’s Minkah Fitzpatrick,” Harrison said to NBC Sports’ Devin McCourty, according to video via NFL on NBC on YouTube. “He could be a cornerback left and right because he studies, he prepares, he works. He’s a great team guy. He is just a fantastic player.

“He’s like you [McCourty]. He’s got corner skills, safety instincts, toughness, and the ability to do it all. He’s just a fantastic player.”

That is lofty praise from Harrison, comparing him to two of arguably the best defensive backs to ever play the game at multiple positions in the Woodsons.

Prior to coming to the Steelers via trade, Fitzpatrick wasn’t happy with the way he was being used by then-Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. He was playing all over the place and wasn’t able to settle into a true role. That changed in Pittsburgh as he slotted in at free safety and thrived.

When he’s been at his best in Pittsburgh, he’s been that centerfield safety, thriving in the robber role, jumping routes, and making plays on the ball. In recent years, he’s had to wear more hats in a secondary undergoing a bunch of changes, but he’s still played at an exceptionally high level.

Hopefully, with better health and some added talent around him in the secondary this offseason, Fitzpatrick can get back to the elite level the Steelers and their fans are used to. If he does, Pittsburgh could really find its defense playing at an elite level and putting the Black and Gold in contention once again.

Superprod Group and Vivement Lundi! are proud to announce the production of Harrison and Me, a 52 x 11′ 2D-animated comedy for five- to eight-year olds which raises awareness for young viewers about the need to take action for our environment every day. Loosely based on the books The Zero Waste Family by Bénédicte Moret and Jérémie Pichon, published by Thierry Souccar, the series is directed by Jean Duval and Abdelraouf Zaidi.

“We are delighted to announce the launch of Harrison and Me,” says Camille Serceau, Producer at Superprod Animation. “This series represents a new chapter in our mission to create series that entertain but also inspire young minds. We firmly believe that this new production will not only captivate children, but also encourage them to reflect on their relationship with nature and their impact on the environment.”

Aurélie Angebault, Producer at Vivement Lundi!, adds, “Harrison and Me is the result of a fruitful collaboration between our two studios, and we look forward to sharing this unique series. This series, which combines humor and ecological awareness, is a perfect example of our commitment to quality entertainment for children.”

Created for television by Angebault and Serceau, with the participation of Nathalie Dargent and Matthieu Chevalier, this new series recounts the adventures of Harrison, an organic and vegetal being, who comes into the lives of Charlie (6 1⁄2), her brother Zach (11) and their friends Bintou (11) and Léon (6). By welcoming and caring for Harrison, the gang of friends take initiative, discover how to act for the planet in their daily lives as children, and more broadly how to reconnect with nature.

Currently in production, the series is being produced in Charente and Brittany, and is supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Charente Department, the Brittany Region and Rennes Métropole. France Télévisions, the series’ development partner, will broadcast the series, as will RTS and TV5. Superights is responsible for international sales of the series worldwide.

“Having a good friend is great. When it’s Harrison, it’s even better!” comments Jean-Baptiste Lamotte, Head of Children’s Programming and Animation, France Télévisions. “Follow the journey of a family as original as they are sensitive to the environmental cause, and do as Zach, Charlie, do: reconnect with nature! Harrison and Me questions our relationship with nature, helps us to adopt the right eco-citizen gestures!”

Kayla Harrison’s biggest challenge may be weight class rather than opposition: Nobody in UFC, Bellator or PFL ‘scares me’

Kayla Harrison always knew her options in the women’s lightweight division were somewhat limited. That’s why she’s long considered a more permanent move down to 145 pounds, where there are far more established opponents. Kayla Harrison always knew her options in the women’s lightweight division were somewhat limited.

That’s why she’s long considered a more permanent move down to 145 pounds, where there are far more established opponents. She was scheduled to compete at featherweight at the upcoming PFL Championship card on Nov. 24 until former Bellator champion Julia Budd was replaced by UFC veteran Aspen Ladd on short notice.

As a result, Harrison will now fight at a catchweight of 150 pounds. But truth be told, the opponent never mattered much anyway.

“I don’t want to say I expected this, but it doesn’t matter,” Harrison told MMA Fighting about her change of opponents. “I focus on what I can control. I’m just looking for a fight, I don’t care who it is.

“Aspen Ladd has never been a champion, Julia Budd’s been a champion, but Aspen Ladd has been in the UFC, [and] Julia Budd has not. Aspen Ladd is younger and probably more up and coming. Julia Budd probably on her way out, but it doesn’t matter, because I beat them both. The one common denominator is ‘Kayla smash.’”

Harrison’s return comes almost exactly one year after the first loss of her career, a decision setback against reigning PFL champion Larissa Pacheco. It seemed the rematch would happen, considering Harrison already holds two previous wins over Pacheco, but the Brazilian got back into the season-long PFL tournament at 145 pounds after the promotion effectively eliminated the women’s lightweight division.

Cutting down to featherweight requires Harrison to make a lot of changes to her diet and training schedule, and she knows doing that four times in a year to join another PFL season would be nearly impossible. That said, she seems ready to call featherweight home in the foreseeable future.

Could that also serve as a precursor to an eventual move down to 135 pounds?

“I mean 135 will challenge me in ways like I’m going to have to lose a piece of me to be able to fight at 135 pounds,” Harrison said. “I think just structurally, I carry a lot of muscle. I’m already kind of lean, so I’m going to have to lose muscle. I’m going to have to change my entire lifestyle. I mean I have already done that to fight at 145.

“It’s crazy what happens when you take care of your body and eat properly and sleep and recover. I was a knucklehead when I was younger. But I have faith whatever is meant to be, will be.”

Harrison’s toughest challenge may be her weight class, because the two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo welcomes fights against anybody. That perhaps means a rematch with Pacheco in the PFL, or even a long awaited showdown against Bellator champion Cris Cyborg.

It also potentially includes a future in the UFC, but that would force Harrison to get down to bantamweight; the promotion has effectively shuttered the last remaining remnants of a largely dormant 145-pound division.

“Listen, have you ever known me to shy away from a fight or say no to fighting someone? No,” Harrison said. “It doesn’t matter what promotion you are. I don’t care. I believe in myself. I don’t care. Everyone’s like ‘well you lost.’ Yeah, guess what? Sometimes giants fall. Sometimes, s*** happens. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes you stumble but it’s not what happens then. It’s what happens after you stumble. I’m not afraid of hard work. I’m not afraid of climbing back up. I’m not afraid of pushing myself and saying no, that’s not it, I’m not done. I’m still here. I’ve got something to prove. I’m not afraid of it. In fact, I relish it.

“Nobody in the UFC, nobody in Bellator and nobody in PFL scares me and I’m willing to put that on the line. I bet on myself.”

The most terrifying obstacle may be weight-cutting, but Harrison attacks that possible challenge with the same kind of ferocity as she does her fights.

“I don’t know the limits of my body in that term there yet,” she said. “I’ve started doing some research and taking some tests and doing some scans and seeing [what’s possible] but I don’t know and I don’t care.

“Because right now all I have to do is make 150 [pounds] and fight Aspen Ladd on Nov. 24. But I never say never. We’ll see what happens.”
