Testosterone Replacement Therapy in Portland, ME

As men age, they experience both positive and negative changes. Many middle-aged men learn to let the little things go and focus on family and friendship. They develop new hobbies and reach their peak earning potential. On the flip side, many men undergo unexpected hormonal changes around this same age. That's a hard pill to swallow for a lot of males, but contrary to common belief, having low testosterone isn't reserved for elderly men.

Studies show that around 55% of males suffer from low testosterone. For many, that drop-off happens in their 40s and 50s. But the truth is that testosterone levels can start to decline as early as age 30, leading to various physical and emotional changes such as decreased energy, increased aches and pains, and even sexual performance issues.

If you're a man experiencing symptoms of low testosterone - like ED or erectile dysfunction - you may feel embarrassed, depressed, or like all hope is lost. Fortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Male health clinics like Med Matrix offer advanced, FDA-approved treatments like testosterone replacement therapy in Portland, ME, to help restore your hormone levels. When your hormones are balanced, it's almost like everything clicks back into place without having to take pills or suffer through surgery.

TRT Clinic Portland, ME

The Med Matrix Difference

Did you know that testosterone is the foundation of all male performance? It's the reason why, in your early 20s, you could have a fun night out on the town and wake up the next morning ready to hit the basketball court. It's the reason why you feel the drive to succeed and find a mate.

Unfortunately, testosterone levels start to decline around the age of 35 (and sometimes sooner, depending on various factors). Past that age, your T levels drop even more. 40% of men over 45 have sub-optimal levels, which can have a negative effect on things like your:

  • Energy Levels
  • Libido
  • Workout Recovery
  • Focus
  • Body Fat
  • Strength
  • Ability to Build Muscle
  • More

Many men approaching middle age aren't even aware that their testosterone levels are dropping. Other males simply don't care and begrudgingly accept the new, uninteresting life that looms in front of them. Today, however, more and more men are ditching that mindset and reclaiming their lives with testosterone replacement therapy in Portland, ME.

How Does TRT Work?

One of the most common questions we get at Med Matrix is, "What does TRT do?" Testosterone replacement therapy does what its name implies: It's a science-backed therapy that replaces low testosterone levels in men. The main objective of going on a TRT regimen is to improve your life and wellbeing by balancing your hormones. Also referred to as androgen replacement therapy, TRT helps many men deal with and overcome the debilitating side effects of low T.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy works by giving your body the testosterone it needs to function properly. Without healthy levels of testosterone, the male body can't maintain the natural processes necessary for overall health. In fact, men with low testosterone levels are more prone to serious health problems such as type-2 diabetes and even heart disease.

Until their testosterone levels are restored to normal, most men suffer until they find a solution. That's where TRT comes into play. With balanced hormones, the body can finally begin to heal, causing most symptoms of low testosterone to diminish greatly.

Here are the 5 Biggest Benefits of Going on TRT in Portland, ME

Up to this point, we've talked a bunch about how beneficial TRT can be for men who have declining testosterone levels. But you may be wondering how TRT specifically benefits you and your body. Here are just a few of the biggest benefits of starting testosterone replacement therapy at Med Matrix.

TRT Clinic Portland, ME

Higher Levels of Energy

The effects of TRT are not immediate and may not be noticeable at first. However, typically, psychological improvements can be felt within three to four weeks of starting treatment. Most individuals experience reduced fatigue, improved sleep, and an overall feeling of being more rested after about a month of treatment. By this time, you may also notice increased motivation to engage in physical activities, which are crucial for your wellbeing and quality of life.

Better Sex Life

If there's one thing that men hate most about having low testosterone, it's that their ability to perform in the bedroom becomes compromised. In fact, diminished sexual function, including low sex drive and erectile dysfunction, is one of the most common reasons why men seek treatment for low T. That's for good reason: Recent research shows a strong correlation between libido and testosterone levels.

Fortunately, testosterone replacement therapy in Portland, ME, can enhance healthy sexual relations with your spouse or partner. Increased testosterone levels in men often lead to increased sexual activity. At Med Matrix, many of our patients report having a higher sex drive within the first three to four weeks of treatment. Many men also reported having stronger and longer-lasting erections.

More Mental Clarity and Focus

Testosterone has a significant impact on cognitive performance, including memory, concentration, and reasoning. When testosterone levels are low, mental function can suffer. When you begin TRT, the heavy cloud that has been hanging over you can start to dissipate. Mental focus, cognition, and memory show signs of improvement after the first few weeks of treatment. Feelings of depression and sudden mood swings start to subside within three to six weeks. By 18 to 30 weeks, you will notice a significant improvement in self-confidence and mental clarity, as well as an inner strength that is more prepared to face life's challenges.

Normalized Blood Sugar Levels

When experiencing hypogonadism, your insulin sensitivity may be compromised, leading to fluctuations in blood sugar levels and an elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Testosterone replacement therapy boosts your insulin sensitivity, enabling your body to efficiently absorb glucose from your blood after a meal.

Typically, significant improvements in blood glucose levels and insulin sensitivity are observed after about three months, with the full effect manifesting after a year. Also, remember this: TRT has been shown to increase your motivation. The tiniest spark of motivation can propel you to become more physically active, further boosting your insulin sensitivity.

Men's Health Medical Practice Portland, ME

Healthy Red Blood Cell Count

Your body produces red blood cells through a process called erythropoiesis. When you suffer from hypogonadism (low T), red blood cell production can slow, leading to anemia. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can help improve red blood cell count, reduce fatigue, and stabilize blood pressure. Results may vary based on age and dosage, but improvements are typically noticeable after three months, with peak benefits at nine to 12 months.

We should note that some TRT patients have higher hematocrit levels than normal (>51%) and need to donate blood regularly as a result. That's why it's important to work with seasoned male health doctors - like those at Med Matrix - when you're considering TRT in Portland, ME.

Build Bigger Muscles

Who doesn't want a great physique? Diet, rest, and exercise are crucial for success. However, when your testosterone levels drop below the normal range, your strength decreases, your body mass decreases, and your once-unstoppable endurance diminishes. Testosterone plays a key role in improving these areas.

Do You Have These Symptoms of Low Testosterone?

Are you used to blasting through your day with productivity and positivity? Have you noticed that you're losing muscle mass and the desire to be with your spouse? Has your partner been complaining that you're too irritable to be around? If you're usually not a curmudgeon, your body is probably trying to tell you something. It could be time to speak with a doctor about testosterone replacement therapy in Portland, ME. Keep a running tally of whichever of the following symptoms you notice happening in your life.

 TRT Men's Clinic Portland, ME

Two words that send shivers down the spines of every man are "erectile dysfunction." Unfortunately, when your T levels are lower than they should be, this is one of the most common symptoms that men must endure. Being unable to get it up isn't just embarrassing - it can be downright depressing and lead to issues with mental health. It's a hard topic to discuss, but a personalized TRT plan from Med Matrix can help.

Decreased energy was once considered a normal part of aging. Nowadays, we know better. Most doctors understand that low energy levels can be linked to low testosterone levels. If you're finding it difficult to engage in activities you used to enjoy, like playing with your kids or going for a workout, it could be a sign of low testosterone. Sure, it's normal to feel tired from time to time. But persistent fatigue and a serious lack of drive might mean something more.

A study from 2011 revealed that men who lose a week's worth of sleep may experience a 15% reduction in testosterone levels. Additional research found that almost 15% of workers get five hours of sleep or less per night. These findings suggest that sleep loss can negatively impact testosterone levels and wellbeing. The big takeaway here is that men who have trouble sleeping often suffer from lower testosterone. If you find yourself exhausted at the end of the day but struggle to sleep through the night, you may be one of those men.

Many people over the age of 50 experience memory loss and lack of concentration. It's a normal part of aging. However, those signs can also mean you have low T. A study from 2006 discovered that males with low testosterone levels performed poorly on cognitive skill tests. This suggests that low testosterone can contribute to reduced cognitive ability. If you can't stay focused on tasks or can't recall words like you used to, have your testosterone levels checked. You could be a prime candidate for TRT.

If you're like millions of other men, coming to grips with hair loss isn't something you want to do. Closely related to hormone imbalances and testosterone decline, hair loss is stressful and embarrassing. It's often related to a derivative of testosterone called DHT. Too much DHT in your body can cause hair follicles to stop production, causing them to die. Because hair located at the front and crown is more sensitive to DHT, it grows slower than other follicles and eventually stops growing altogether. While you can't alter your genes, you can address low testosterone in your body. Whether you're suffering from thinning hair or hair loss across your entire head, TRT and solutions like peptides and stem cells can stop your head from shedding hair.

Gynecomastia, also known as "man boobs," is the enlargement of male breast tissue, often caused by hormonal imbalances and an increase in estrogen. Elevated estrogen levels during andropause, also known as male menopause, usually occur due to a lack of testosterone. If you're a man between 40 and 55 and feel embarrassed about having large breasts, ask your doctor about TRT. When combined with a healthy diet and exercise, it could be the solution to your problem without needing surgery.

PORTLAND, Oregon — All northbound lanes of Interstate 5, north of the Fremont Bridge, will remain closed through Tuesday after a vehicle carrying propane tanks caught on fire earlier in the morning.

The fire severely damaged the road and requires emergency grinding and paving, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) said. The agency has no estimate as to when the northbound lanes will reopen.

Northbound traffic over the Fremont Bridge will be diverted onto southbound I-5. Drivers headed to Washington should take Interstate 84 east to Interstate 205, ODOT said. The southbound lanes of I-5 are back open.

A vehicle with a trailer carrying about 120 propane tanks caught fire around 4:48 a.m. near the Swan Island exit, on the northbound side of the freeway, according to Portland Fire & Rescue. I-5 was closed in both directions before the southbound lanes reopened after 6 a.m.

"There definitely was some exploding canisters that are no longer a part of the solid pile that's (the) remainder of the trailer," Rick Graves with Portland Fire said. "There was explosions occurring. Could be quite a significant danger to rescuers as well as spectators or observers on scene."

Graves described the propane tanks as the kind used for backyard grills or patio heaters.

The vehicle was fully engulfed for about 30 minutes before crews began dosing it in water. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported, according to Graves.

It's unclear exactly what caused the propane tanks to catch on fire. Graves said there was no vehicle or tractor attached to the trailer when they arrived on scene. He added that Portland Fire has had no contact with the driver.

This is a developing story and it will be updated as more information becomes available.

Professional boxing makes its return to the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Saturday night for the first time in 30 years.

PORTLAND, Maine — The next chapter of Maine's illustrious professional boxing history will be written Saturday night.

The Father's Day Pro Boxing Classic will be a ten-bout card featuring Championship Triple Header title fights as well as amateur matchups.

It will mark the first professional boxing event at the Cross Insurance Arena in 30 years.

Many local fighters will be in the ring Saturday night and spent the past week training at the Portland Boxing Club, which has been home to countless champions over the last three decades.

“It’s an obsession. Boxing is not a sport, it’s an obsession," owner Bob Russo told NEWS CENTER Maine. "Someone told me that years ago and I’ll tell ya, he was right."

For 32 years, Russo has helped put on events across the state and brought his fighters around the country.

“People are asking me all the time, 'We need to do more shows, because we do so well,'" Owner Bob Russo said. “I’d love to bring my fighters across the street [in Portland] rather than bring them to Chicago to get a bout."

Russo has helped mentor young boxers over the years, and many of them don't leave. Fighters like Portland's Casey Streeter have been going to the gym for more than 20 years.

Streeter will fight Jimmy Williams for the New England Super Welterweight Championship as part of Saturday's main event.

“I basically grew up in this building. I made a lot of friends that are family now," he said. “Boxing [is] not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. I live, breathe, and eat this sport."

That love for boxing was tested for Streeter when he suffered a devastating leg injury after a logging accident. The grapple of the log truck grabbed his leg, Streeter said, and required multiple surgeries and extensive rehab.

“The doctor told me I would never really walk normally again, let alone box," he said. "So, I took that as motivation the whole time I was out and wanted to prove everybody wrong."

About one year after the accident, Streeter was back in the ring. His inner drive and the support from the Portland Boxing Club helped him get back to fighting.

Streeter said Russo is like a father to him and helped mentor him both in and outside the ring.

"I had a pretty rough upbringing as a child, which kind of [brought] me to the gym, I needed an outlet from my home; someplace that was a positive environment rather than a negative environment," he explained.

The Portland Boxing Club's slogan, displayed on the sign above the front door, is "Making Champions and Good Citizens."

“So we help mentor them into a good person, and the sport demands that, that you have to train and you have to be clean," Russo said. “We’re like family, we’re close-knit, we all try to get better, and hopefully we can improve every day that we’re here".

At its core, Russo said the boxing club is a youth program, helping young kids find their direction in life.

For Streeter, boxing has helped him with his mental health. He said when he walks into the gym, he is at peace.

Ilyas Bashir of Auburn is the defending All New England Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion. The Bates College junior will face Ashbel Abilly in a Lightweights match.

In the Middleweights Division, fellow New England Golden Gloves Champion Wade Faria of Portland will make his professional debut.

“It’s going to be a fun night, I like to dance, I might be able to bust some moves in there, so come down and see me dance," Faria said.

Faria began training at the Portland Boxing Club after graduating from high school and learned very quickly how much dedication is needed to be a successful boxer. He also said he's learned a lot about himself during his career and said it's important to never doubt yourself.

2023 All New England Golden Gloves Super Heavyweight Champion Zordan Holman of Westbrook, West Forks' Brandon Berry, and Lewiston's Hunter Dickerson will also fight on Saturday.

The action begins at 6:30 p.m. You can find more ticket information here.

The James Beard Foundation announced the winners of its annual awards for 2024 Monday night, with two from Portland receiving top honors.

Atsuko Fujimoto, owner of Norimoto Bakery, took home the national award for “Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker,” while ZU Bakery won the foundation’s award for “Outstanding Bakery.”

On Monday, the foundation presented its 2024 winners in a special ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The event was livestreamed on YouTube.

Fujimoto’s Norimoto Bakery is on Stevens Avenue. Its website describes it as “European baking, Japanese sensibility, Maine ingredients.”

Fujimoto beat competitors from Washington, D.C., Doral and Miami, Florida, Phoenix and Chicago.

When she won, she took to the stage with her hands over her mouth as an announcer noted she came to Portland from her native Japan to pursue a career in journalism.

But when she got here, she went to Fore Street restaurant and gave a handwritten note to Chef Sam Hayward to ask to be a part of the restaurant’s pastry program, which kicked off her baking career.

The foundation described her cuisine as “European/Japanese baking,” with babka buns, danishes and chocolate sake cake listed among her signature dishes.

On stage, she wore an ivory-colored Japanese kimono and running shoes. She confessed she didn’t expect to win and said, “I have to gather myself.”

She thanked and named her team of six staff members, which she said was a small team but “a golden team.” She also earned laughs by poking fun at her own ensemble.

“I want to thank my mom for letting me wear this kimono tonight. It’s so uncomfortable, but it’s so worth it,” she said. She then pointed to her feet, saying, “I’m sorry I’m wearing sneakers tonight, but I work in a kitchen, you know?”

She then got serious and thanked the restaurant community in Portland that helped shape her career after she arrived 23 years ago at age 30.

“I was just able to continue working in a kitchen even though I had no experience at all, just because I enjoyed it so much,” she said. “So, I want to thank them all, the food people in Portland, Maine. Thank you for making me a baker.”

ZU Bakery has been on Clark Street in Portland for the past year and a half, according to its founder, Barak Olins, but he first started the bakery in Freeport in 2000 in a barn lent to him by his brother and sister-in-law. ZU Bakery’s website describes itself as offering “delicious, rustic breads + pastry.”

ZU Bakery beat out four other competitors from Albuquerque, NM, Long Beach, Calif., Portland, Ore. and Hudson, NY. The announcement came immediately after Fujimoto’s, prompting one commentator to say, “Well, it looks like Portland, Maine might be vying for pastry capital of America!”

As Olins came to the stage, the commentators noted his bakery was known for its wood-fired ovens. The foundation listed ZU Bakery’s cuisine as “French,” with scones and pavé listed among the bakery’s signature pastries.

Olins displayed similar humility to Fujimoto. As he pulled notes from his pocket he quipped, “I wrote something thinking I would never read this.”

Like Fujimoto, Olins also thanked his staff, also mentioning all three by name, then added, “Actually, Norimoto has a very big crew compared to me.”

Olins also thanked his parents for buying him his first frying pan at age 8. He thanked his wife, saying, “She inherited a bakers’ schedule without choosing to be a baker.”

Olins also thanked a Benihana chef he did not name, who helped inspire him to be a chef nearly 50 years ago.

“There I tasted the flavors of well-made, fast-cooked food and saw the expression of cooking as a craft visible and generously accessible to the public,” he said.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — On Friday, Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of two new homes on Sunset Avenue in South Portland.

These homes are part of a broader initiative to increase the availability of affordable housing in Cumberland County.

Habitat for Humanity said they plan to build six more homes in this area, adding to the inventory of affordable homes in Cumberland County.

Two Maine families have already moved into these newly built homes, one of which belongs to Sarah Henderson and her four children.

Sarah, a South Portland native, had to move an hour away due to rising rents, leading to a lengthy daily commute to her job in the city.

Her journey with Habitat for Humanity began years ago.

"My dad one day showed me a newspaper clipping that Habitat was coming to South Portland. That was before COVID, a long time ago," Henderson said.

Despite the daunting process, she never gave up hope, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

"Back then they did these meetings, you had to go in and sit in a room with 40 other people, and you just think, 'It’ll never be me.' Then, you have to do interviews, and I'd always be like, 'That one went really bad.' But then they kept calling me back, so I just did whatever they asked," Henderson explained.

After a year of persistence, she received the life-changing news.

"They called me at work, and I cried," Henderson said.

Potential homeowners must meet specific income qualifications and contribute significantly to their new homes. They pay one-third of their monthly income toward the mortgage, taxes, and insurance and invest time and labor building their future homes.

"After they have been approved for their home, they have to put in 275 hours of sweat equity. That’s building their home, working in the restoration, doing community service, and doing financial training to make sure they are set up for their future," Tara Hill, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, explained.

The program aims to empower families like the Hendersons to own homes they otherwise couldn't afford.

"You're still doing the work, you know what it's for, but it never seems real, even when I closed on the house it didn't seem real until I walked in with the key myself," Henderson said.

Habitat for Humanity's efforts in South Portland are part of a larger plan, with 12 additional homes being constructed in Standish. These initiatives represent the organization's ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing and supporting community development.
