Functional Medicine in Portland, ME

Have you ever been to a primary care doctor and wondered why they focus on treating symptoms instead of addressing the root cause of your illness? Rather than take a patient-centered approach to address questions like, "Why are you ill?" they prescribe medications that alleviate symptoms but don't do much to solve the underlying issue that's causing you to be sick.

When you have a cough, you're handed a cough suppressant. When you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, you're prescribed a pill that masks the issue. The truth is that this approach only masks symptoms and can even make them exponentially worse. Medication never treats the root cause; your body's dysfunction isn't due to a deficiency of the medication you're taking.

That begs the question: Wouldn't you prefer to deal with the underlying cause of the problem making you feel bad? At Med Matrix, we take a functional approach to medicine instead of simply treating the symptoms our patients have.

We ask questions like:

  • Why is your body making more cholesterol?
  • Why are you obese?
  • Why is your blood pressure higher than ever before?

What is Functional Medicine from Med Matrix?

The functional medicine model of care offers a patient-centered approach to managing chronic diseases. It aims to answer the question, "Why are you ill?" so that you can receive personalized and effective care tailored to your needs.

Functional medicine providers in Portland, like Med Matrix, take the time to listen to you and gather your medical history. This information helps us identify the root cause(s) of the illness, including triggers such as:

  • Poor Nutrition

Top 6 Reasons to Consider Functional Medicine in Portland, ME

One of the most popular questions we get from new patients at Med Matrix is why they should even consider functional medical services over those at conventional medical centers. We get it - if you've only known the traditional side of medicine, exploring treatment from a functional medical doctor might seem unnecessary or uncomfortable. Before you retreat back into your comfort zone, take these points into consideration.

Comprehensive Treatment Options

Unlike conventional doctors, who must work in a narrow scope of treatment, functional medicine opens the doorway to a wealth of therapies and treatments. For instance, at Med Matrix, when a patient presents with symptoms of depression, we don't simply consider which prescription medication to prescribe.

We thoroughly assess omega-3 levels, vitamin D levels, hormones, thyroid imbalances, gut issues, and inflammatory markers. Our goal is to identify the root cause of your depression. We seek to understand WHY your depression is happening. Some common functional medicine treatment options can include the following:

  • Health Coaching
  • Lifestyle Changes
  • Diet Optimization
  • Holistic Treatments and Therapies
  • Hormone Balancing
  • IV Vitamin Therapy
  • Med Spa Services
  • Peptide Therapy

Healthcare and Wellness Services Catered to You

Functional medicine recognizes that each person is unique, so their treatment should be personalized. We all have different genetics, upbringings, diets, stress levels, and backgrounds. As functional medicine providers, we aim to understand each patient's life story from birth and create a plan that is tailored to them. Common sense says that conversation could take some time, and you'd be correct. An initial consultation with a functional medicine provider from Med Matrix can last an hour or more. But that allows us to provide you with focused, one-on-one attention.

This approach is in stark contrast to an appointment with a primary care physician, which only lasts a few minutes and can make you feel like you're just a number. It's challenging to have a meaningful conversation and provide a comprehensive solution in such a short time. Doctors who practice functional medicine in Portland, ME, often see fewer patients per day, and for good reason - they're able to devote more time and energy to you, not processing transactions.

Education that Empowers

The primary objective of functional medicine is to equip and empower the patient to take charge of their health and enhance their quality of life. Since you can't visit a Med Matrix doctor every day, it's important that we continue your healing process using guidance provided by your functional medicine provider.

This guidance will cover important topics relating to your individual health, and may include protocols for optimizing your diet, lifestyle, exercise, stress, and supplements intake. We couple that guidance with advanced lab testing, condition diagnosis, and medication management. We understand that can be a lot to process in one or two meetings. As such, we may recommend health coaching and other services to help.

System-Based Treatment Protocols

Functional medicine believes in treating the person, not just the disease or the symptoms. Most conventional medicine models prioritize prescription medications that match up to specific symptoms. In the world of functional medicine, that's a short-sided approach. Instead, providers at Med Matrix take a systems-based approach to care.

For instance, if you're concerned about enduring too much stress, we want to know that's due to inflammation, malfunctioning adrenals, G.I. problems, or something else entirely. To find out, we check the functionality of your kidneys, heart, gut, liver, thyroid, hormones, and even your vitamin D levels. The more we know, the better understanding we have of the systems we need to address.

Uncover the Root Cause

Many people struggle to find answers to their medical conditions because they are passed around from doctor to specialist and back again. This happens frequently. Numerous patients have told us that they were informed, "it's all in your head" and "your labs look normal," despite experiencing severe symptoms indicating that something was wrong.

When you come to Med Matrix for a functional medicine appointment, it's almost like you're hiring a medical detective to uncover the root cause of your symptoms. Our doctors thrive on difficult cases and won't stop investigating until a solution is uncovered.

Cost-Effective Treatment, Long-Lasting Results

Functional medicine goes by many names, such as integrative, holistic, personalized, and preventative. Preventative medicine is the most cost-effective form of healthcare. By preventing or slowing down diseases, you can save future healthcare costs that would have been incurred if a preventative approach wasn't taken.

For instance, let's consider Type II Diabetes. Patients who visit a functional medicine provider are proactive and start addressing blood sugar concerns well before conventional medicine does. Functional medicine providers monitor blood sugar levels even before they reach conventional pre-diabetes levels. When patients are informed and educated about diet and lifestyle before the onset of a disease, much better results are achieved in disease prevention. Once someone has a diagnosis or disease, it becomes more challenging and expensive to correct.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals for Maintaining Your Health

One of the major hallmarks of functional medicine in Portland, ME, is to stay healthy year-round by eating a healthy diet and exercising. While diet and exercise are crucial for wellness, many Americans don't get the necessary amounts of vitamins and nutrients in their diets. Whether you're working with a health coach or you're simply looking for diet tips, keep these important supplements in mind as you work towards a healthy life.

PORTLAND, Oregon — All northbound lanes of Interstate 5, north of the Fremont Bridge, will remain closed through Tuesday after a vehicle carrying propane tanks caught on fire earlier in the morning.

The fire severely damaged the road and requires emergency grinding and paving, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) said. The agency has no estimate as to when the northbound lanes will reopen.

Northbound traffic over the Fremont Bridge will be diverted onto southbound I-5. Drivers headed to Washington should take Interstate 84 east to Interstate 205, ODOT said. The southbound lanes of I-5 are back open.

A vehicle with a trailer carrying about 120 propane tanks caught fire around 4:48 a.m. near the Swan Island exit, on the northbound side of the freeway, according to Portland Fire & Rescue. I-5 was closed in both directions before the southbound lanes reopened after 6 a.m.

"There definitely was some exploding canisters that are no longer a part of the solid pile that's (the) remainder of the trailer," Rick Graves with Portland Fire said. "There was explosions occurring. Could be quite a significant danger to rescuers as well as spectators or observers on scene."

Graves described the propane tanks as the kind used for backyard grills or patio heaters.

The vehicle was fully engulfed for about 30 minutes before crews began dosing it in water. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported, according to Graves.

It's unclear exactly what caused the propane tanks to catch on fire. Graves said there was no vehicle or tractor attached to the trailer when they arrived on scene. He added that Portland Fire has had no contact with the driver.

This is a developing story and it will be updated as more information becomes available.

Professional boxing makes its return to the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland on Saturday night for the first time in 30 years.

PORTLAND, Maine — The next chapter of Maine's illustrious professional boxing history will be written Saturday night.

The Father's Day Pro Boxing Classic will be a ten-bout card featuring Championship Triple Header title fights as well as amateur matchups.

It will mark the first professional boxing event at the Cross Insurance Arena in 30 years.

Many local fighters will be in the ring Saturday night and spent the past week training at the Portland Boxing Club, which has been home to countless champions over the last three decades.

“It’s an obsession. Boxing is not a sport, it’s an obsession," owner Bob Russo told NEWS CENTER Maine. "Someone told me that years ago and I’ll tell ya, he was right."

For 32 years, Russo has helped put on events across the state and brought his fighters around the country.

“People are asking me all the time, 'We need to do more shows, because we do so well,'" Owner Bob Russo said. “I’d love to bring my fighters across the street [in Portland] rather than bring them to Chicago to get a bout."

Russo has helped mentor young boxers over the years, and many of them don't leave. Fighters like Portland's Casey Streeter have been going to the gym for more than 20 years.

Streeter will fight Jimmy Williams for the New England Super Welterweight Championship as part of Saturday's main event.

“I basically grew up in this building. I made a lot of friends that are family now," he said. “Boxing [is] not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. I live, breathe, and eat this sport."

That love for boxing was tested for Streeter when he suffered a devastating leg injury after a logging accident. The grapple of the log truck grabbed his leg, Streeter said, and required multiple surgeries and extensive rehab.

“The doctor told me I would never really walk normally again, let alone box," he said. "So, I took that as motivation the whole time I was out and wanted to prove everybody wrong."

About one year after the accident, Streeter was back in the ring. His inner drive and the support from the Portland Boxing Club helped him get back to fighting.

Streeter said Russo is like a father to him and helped mentor him both in and outside the ring.

"I had a pretty rough upbringing as a child, which kind of [brought] me to the gym, I needed an outlet from my home; someplace that was a positive environment rather than a negative environment," he explained.

The Portland Boxing Club's slogan, displayed on the sign above the front door, is "Making Champions and Good Citizens."

“So we help mentor them into a good person, and the sport demands that, that you have to train and you have to be clean," Russo said. “We’re like family, we’re close-knit, we all try to get better, and hopefully we can improve every day that we’re here".

At its core, Russo said the boxing club is a youth program, helping young kids find their direction in life.

For Streeter, boxing has helped him with his mental health. He said when he walks into the gym, he is at peace.

Ilyas Bashir of Auburn is the defending All New England Golden Gloves Lightweight Champion. The Bates College junior will face Ashbel Abilly in a Lightweights match.

In the Middleweights Division, fellow New England Golden Gloves Champion Wade Faria of Portland will make his professional debut.

“It’s going to be a fun night, I like to dance, I might be able to bust some moves in there, so come down and see me dance," Faria said.

Faria began training at the Portland Boxing Club after graduating from high school and learned very quickly how much dedication is needed to be a successful boxer. He also said he's learned a lot about himself during his career and said it's important to never doubt yourself.

2023 All New England Golden Gloves Super Heavyweight Champion Zordan Holman of Westbrook, West Forks' Brandon Berry, and Lewiston's Hunter Dickerson will also fight on Saturday.

The action begins at 6:30 p.m. You can find more ticket information here.

The James Beard Foundation announced the winners of its annual awards for 2024 Monday night, with two from Portland receiving top honors.

Atsuko Fujimoto, owner of Norimoto Bakery, took home the national award for “Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker,” while ZU Bakery won the foundation’s award for “Outstanding Bakery.”

On Monday, the foundation presented its 2024 winners in a special ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The event was livestreamed on YouTube.

Fujimoto’s Norimoto Bakery is on Stevens Avenue. Its website describes it as “European baking, Japanese sensibility, Maine ingredients.”

Fujimoto beat competitors from Washington, D.C., Doral and Miami, Florida, Phoenix and Chicago.

When she won, she took to the stage with her hands over her mouth as an announcer noted she came to Portland from her native Japan to pursue a career in journalism.

But when she got here, she went to Fore Street restaurant and gave a handwritten note to Chef Sam Hayward to ask to be a part of the restaurant’s pastry program, which kicked off her baking career.

The foundation described her cuisine as “European/Japanese baking,” with babka buns, danishes and chocolate sake cake listed among her signature dishes.

On stage, she wore an ivory-colored Japanese kimono and running shoes. She confessed she didn’t expect to win and said, “I have to gather myself.”

She thanked and named her team of six staff members, which she said was a small team but “a golden team.” She also earned laughs by poking fun at her own ensemble.

“I want to thank my mom for letting me wear this kimono tonight. It’s so uncomfortable, but it’s so worth it,” she said. She then pointed to her feet, saying, “I’m sorry I’m wearing sneakers tonight, but I work in a kitchen, you know?”

She then got serious and thanked the restaurant community in Portland that helped shape her career after she arrived 23 years ago at age 30.

“I was just able to continue working in a kitchen even though I had no experience at all, just because I enjoyed it so much,” she said. “So, I want to thank them all, the food people in Portland, Maine. Thank you for making me a baker.”

ZU Bakery has been on Clark Street in Portland for the past year and a half, according to its founder, Barak Olins, but he first started the bakery in Freeport in 2000 in a barn lent to him by his brother and sister-in-law. ZU Bakery’s website describes itself as offering “delicious, rustic breads + pastry.”

ZU Bakery beat out four other competitors from Albuquerque, NM, Long Beach, Calif., Portland, Ore. and Hudson, NY. The announcement came immediately after Fujimoto’s, prompting one commentator to say, “Well, it looks like Portland, Maine might be vying for pastry capital of America!”

As Olins came to the stage, the commentators noted his bakery was known for its wood-fired ovens. The foundation listed ZU Bakery’s cuisine as “French,” with scones and pavé listed among the bakery’s signature pastries.

Olins displayed similar humility to Fujimoto. As he pulled notes from his pocket he quipped, “I wrote something thinking I would never read this.”

Like Fujimoto, Olins also thanked his staff, also mentioning all three by name, then added, “Actually, Norimoto has a very big crew compared to me.”

Olins also thanked his parents for buying him his first frying pan at age 8. He thanked his wife, saying, “She inherited a bakers’ schedule without choosing to be a baker.”

Olins also thanked a Benihana chef he did not name, who helped inspire him to be a chef nearly 50 years ago.

“There I tasted the flavors of well-made, fast-cooked food and saw the expression of cooking as a craft visible and generously accessible to the public,” he said.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — On Friday, Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of two new homes on Sunset Avenue in South Portland.

These homes are part of a broader initiative to increase the availability of affordable housing in Cumberland County.

Habitat for Humanity said they plan to build six more homes in this area, adding to the inventory of affordable homes in Cumberland County.

Two Maine families have already moved into these newly built homes, one of which belongs to Sarah Henderson and her four children.

Sarah, a South Portland native, had to move an hour away due to rising rents, leading to a lengthy daily commute to her job in the city.

Her journey with Habitat for Humanity began years ago.

"My dad one day showed me a newspaper clipping that Habitat was coming to South Portland. That was before COVID, a long time ago," Henderson said.

Despite the daunting process, she never gave up hope, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

"Back then they did these meetings, you had to go in and sit in a room with 40 other people, and you just think, 'It’ll never be me.' Then, you have to do interviews, and I'd always be like, 'That one went really bad.' But then they kept calling me back, so I just did whatever they asked," Henderson explained.

After a year of persistence, she received the life-changing news.

"They called me at work, and I cried," Henderson said.

Potential homeowners must meet specific income qualifications and contribute significantly to their new homes. They pay one-third of their monthly income toward the mortgage, taxes, and insurance and invest time and labor building their future homes.

"After they have been approved for their home, they have to put in 275 hours of sweat equity. That’s building their home, working in the restoration, doing community service, and doing financial training to make sure they are set up for their future," Tara Hill, executive director of Habitat for Humanity, explained.

The program aims to empower families like the Hendersons to own homes they otherwise couldn't afford.

"You're still doing the work, you know what it's for, but it never seems real, even when I closed on the house it didn't seem real until I walked in with the key myself," Henderson said.

Habitat for Humanity's efforts in South Portland are part of a larger plan, with 12 additional homes being constructed in Standish. These initiatives represent the organization's ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing and supporting community development.
