Functional Medicine
IV Therapy
Med Matrix is a functional medicine clinic in South Portland, Maine offering IV nutrient therapy: hydration and electrolytes, glutathione, high-dose vitamin C, B vitamins, amino acids, and NAD+. We are not a drip lounge with a fixed menu. Infusions are chosen by a licensed provider based on what your bloodwork shows you are actually low in.

What Is IV Therapy?
IV therapy delivers fluids, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly into a vein through a small catheter, usually over 30 to 60 minutes while you sit in a chair. Because the infusion goes straight into your bloodstream, it skips the digestive tract entirely. That is the whole mechanical argument for IV over a pill: an oral supplement has to survive stomach acid and cross the gut wall, and how much actually gets absorbed varies a lot from person to person. An IV dose does not have that variable.
That matters most for people whose absorption is genuinely impaired. If you have inflammatory bowel disease, celiac, a history of gut surgery, chronic diarrhea, or you are recovering from an illness that wrecked your appetite, oral repletion can be slow and unreliable. It matters less if your gut works fine and your levels are normal, which is the honest caveat most IV clinics leave out.
What we infuse at Med Matrix:
- Hydration and electrolytes. Sterile saline with electrolytes. The baseline of most infusions and the reason people feel a difference fastest.
- Glutathione. An antioxidant your liver makes and uses in detoxification pathways. Often given on its own or added to a nutrient bag.
- High-dose vitamin C. Doses well above what the gut can absorb orally, which is the specific reason it is given by vein rather than by mouth.
- B vitamins and B12. Involved in energy metabolism and nerve function. Commonly low in people on acid-blocking medication, on metformin, or eating little animal protein.
- Amino acids. The building blocks your body uses for muscle repair and neurotransmitter production.
- NAD+ and NAD precursors. A coenzyme involved in cellular energy production and DNA repair. Infused slowly, because pushing it too fast is uncomfortable.
- Myers' cocktail. A long-standing combination of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C, named after the physician who developed it.
- IV ozone and UVBI. Offered for select patients. These carry a different risk and evidence profile from nutrient infusions, and we discuss both openly before anyone starts. See our guide to IV ozone therapy.
One thing worth saying plainly, because the industry usually does not: the research behind wellness IV drips is thinner than the marketing suggests. Correcting a documented deficiency has good evidence behind it. Infusing vitamins into someone whose levels are already normal mostly produces expensive urine. That is exactly why we test first.
Inside Med Matrix
Everything Under One Roof
Advanced testing, personalized protocols, and real results from a team that treats the whole picture.
Why We Test Before We Infuse
Most places selling IV therapy in Maine are drip lounges or mobile services. You pick a bag off a menu by its name, someone runs it, and you leave. Nobody has looked at your bloodwork, because there is no bloodwork. The bag you chose is the bag you get, whether or not your body needed anything in it.
Med Matrix is a functional medicine clinic, and IV therapy sits inside that. New patients start with a panel of 80+ biomarkers and an InBody 770 body composition scan. That panel covers the things that actually decide whether an infusion will help you: B12 and folate, vitamin D, ferritin and full iron studies, magnesium, thyroid, inflammatory markers, and metabolic health. Then you sit down with a provider for a full 60 minutes to go through every result.
Two things come out of that. First, we know which nutrients you are genuinely low in, so the infusion is built around your results instead of a menu name. Second, and this is the part patients tend to find more useful, we often find the reason you were low in the first place. Low B12 with a normal diet points somewhere. So does ferritin on the floor. An IV corrects the number. Finding the cause is what keeps it from coming back, and that is a different conversation than a drip bar can have with you.
Who IV therapy is not right for. If you have kidney disease, heart failure, or a condition where fluid volume is managed carefully, IV fluids carry real risk and we will tell you so. High-dose vitamin C is not appropriate for people with G6PD deficiency. Some infusions interact with medications. This is a medical treatment, and a provider reviewing your history is not a formality.
Everything happens at one clinic at 198 Maine Mall Road in South Portland. We serve patients from Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, and across southern Maine and New Hampshire, but there is one location and one care team, so your labs, your infusions, and your record stay in the same place.

“Immediately I feel better, I sleep better, I exercise better. I notice a huge difference.”

Patient Story
What We Check Before an Infusion
Vitamin B12 and folate
The two most common deficiencies behind fatigue and brain fog, and both are frequently low in people on metformin or long-term acid blockers.
Vitamin D, 25-hydroxy
Widely low in Maine, where limited winter sun makes dietary and supplemental intake the only real source for months at a time.
Ferritin and full iron studies
Ferritin can be on the floor while a standard CBC still reads normal, which is why fatigue gets missed. It also decides whether an infusion is appropriate at all.
Magnesium
Involved in hundreds of enzyme reactions, commonly depleted by chronic stress, and a core ingredient in the Myers' cocktail.
Comprehensive metabolic panel
Includes kidney function and electrolytes. This is the safety check that determines whether IV fluid volume is safe for you.
Complete blood count
Screens for anemia and signs of infection, either of which changes what an infusion should contain and whether it should happen now.
Full thyroid panel
Low thyroid function produces the same fatigue and cold intolerance people attribute to a vitamin deficiency. Worth ruling in or out before infusing anything.
hs-CRP
An inflammation marker. Persistently high inflammation points to an underlying driver that an infusion will not fix on its own.

FAQ
IV Therapy FAQ
Pricing depends on which infusion you receive, how long it runs, and whether it is a single session or part of an ongoing plan, so we quote it directly rather than publishing one number that would be wrong for most people. What we can tell you up front is the structure. New patients begin with the testing and consultation phase, which runs approximately $1,200 to $1,500 and includes the 80+ biomarker panel, the InBody 770 scan, and the full 60-minute provider consultation. Follow-up visits are $275. Med Matrix is cash-pay and accepts HSA, FSA, and CareCredit. Call (207) 544-4643 for current infusion pricing, and your first visit includes a $100 voucher.
Generally no. Most insurers treat wellness and nutrient infusions as elective and do not reimburse them, which is true across the industry and not specific to Med Matrix. Infusions ordered to treat a diagnosed medical condition are sometimes handled differently by a given plan, so it is worth asking your insurer directly. Med Matrix operates as a cash-pay clinic, which is what lets us run an 80+ biomarker panel and spend a full hour with you rather than working to an insurance visit length. We accept HSA and FSA funds, which many patients can apply here, along with CareCredit.
It depends entirely on whether you are correcting something real. If your labs show a genuine deficiency, or your gut does not absorb nutrients well because of inflammatory bowel disease, celiac, or prior gut surgery, IV delivery does something oral supplements struggle to do and the value is straightforward. If your levels are already normal, the honest answer is that most of what you infuse gets filtered out by your kidneys, and the research supporting routine wellness drips in healthy people is weaker than the marketing implies. That is the reason we test before we infuse instead of selling from a menu. If your panel says you do not need it, we will tell you.
Most nutrient infusions run 30 to 60 minutes. NAD+ takes longer because it has to be infused slowly, since a fast drip is genuinely uncomfortable. You sit in a lounge chair for the duration and most patients read, work, or scroll their phone. Your first appointment is longer than the infusion itself, because it includes lab work and your 60-minute provider consultation before anything is administered.
Yes, and that is the main thing that separates us from a drip lounge. New patients complete a panel of 80+ biomarkers and an InBody 770 body composition scan, then review the results with a provider before any infusion is ordered. It serves two purposes. It shows which nutrients you are actually low in, so the infusion is built for you rather than picked off a board. It also flags the conditions that make IV therapy unsafe, including kidney disease, heart failure, and G6PD deficiency, which nobody can screen for without looking.
A Myers' cocktail is a specific combination of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C given by IV. It was developed by Dr. John Myers, a Baltimore physician, and it has been used in integrative medicine for decades, which makes it one of the more established nutrient infusion formulas. It is a reasonable starting point for many patients. It is still a fixed recipe, though, so at Med Matrix we treat it as one option rather than the default, and we adjust based on what your panel shows.
NAD+ is a coenzyme every cell uses for energy production and DNA repair, and levels do decline with age, so the biological rationale is real. Human clinical evidence for IV NAD+ improving energy, cognition, or longevity outcomes is still early, and any clinic telling you otherwise is ahead of the data. Patients who use it typically report improved energy and mental clarity. We are comfortable offering it with that framing: a promising intervention with a sound mechanism and limited trial evidence, infused slowly by a provider who has reviewed your labs, rather than a proven anti-aging treatment.
There is no single schedule, and frequency should follow your labs rather than a subscription cadence. Correcting a documented deficiency may take a short series of infusions followed by a recheck to confirm the numbers moved. Patients using IV therapy for ongoing support often settle into something monthly. What we do not recommend is infusing on a fixed schedule indefinitely without ever rechecking whether it is still needed. Your provider sets the interval and adjusts it as your follow-up labs come back.
Yes. Med Matrix has one clinic, at 198 Maine Mall Road in South Portland, which is a short drive from downtown Portland and directly off the Maine Mall exits. We regularly see patients from Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Falmouth, Cape Elizabeth, and Cumberland County, along with patients driving down from central Maine and up from the New Hampshire seacoast. There is one location, so the providers who read your labs are the ones overseeing your infusions.
