Heather: Feeling like herself again from 10 years ago

Summary

Heather moved from New Hampshire to Maine in early 2025 and used the transition as an opportunity to leave the traditional health insurance system entirely after it doubled in cost. She found Med Matrix through social media while searching for patient-centered functional medicine. Three months in, she is working on weight management and menopausal symptoms, sleeping better, and feeling more like herself from 10 years ago. She particularly values being a participant in her own health rather than a passive recipient of care.

Before Med Matrix

  • Weight management struggles
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Repeated frustration leaving PCP appointments with no answers
  • Tried conventional weight loss programs (cognitive behavioral therapy approach, telehealth weight loss program) without adequate support
  • PCP could not order more thorough labs due to health insurance system constraints (not lack of willingness)
  • Health insurance through the marketplace nearly doubled when moving to Maine

Results

  • Sleeping better
  • Weight loss in progress (happy with progress at 3 months)
  • Menopausal symptoms improving
  • Greater mental clarity
  • Feeling more like herself from 10 years ago
  • More confident; feels she took control of a broken system
  • Excited to be a participant in her own healthcare
  • No longer coming home frustrated after every appointment

Key Quotes

I would say that I'm more excited to be a participant in my own health. That would probably be the biggest thing.

Confidence, I would say. Knowing that I took control, that I decided that the system was broke and I was going to try something different.

Every time I would come home from my PCP, I was just always really frustrated. Relieved, I would say, is how those close to me would describe the difference.

Feeling more clarity. Just a little bit more like myself 10 years ago.

I did have some uh some issues with conventional medicine but also with probably the conventional health insurance um industry or the way they operated. I found that despite asking my PCP to run maybe more thorough lab tests or kind of dig deeper into my symptoms or um just kind of try to connect the dots a little bit better. She just wasn't she just didn't seem interested. I later then realized that it wasn't because she didn't care. It was more that she couldn't she herself didn't have control over her own practices because of the health the health insurance industry. I did try a weight loss program um well I of course tried N uh which is more of a cognitive behavioral therapy and then I also did try um kind of teaalth weight loss program and I just didn't feel like I had the support I needed. I moved from New Hampshire to Maine in early 2025. And by moving ac across state lines, you have to get different health insurance. And the health insurance almost doubled through the marketplace coming into Maine. And I then just started looking up functional medicine or medicine um you know that that was more patient centric. I found you guys kind of just browsing social media and I realized that comparatively the cost was going to be the same but I would have a whole lot more uh input and just uh voice in the process. I felt comfortable from the moment you know I walked in here. I felt that the team was all working together and and uh pretty solid on the communication. So I really didn't have many fears and I have had quite a positive experience. Well, first of all, the the lab work allows me to be part of it. I get to see the reports. Um the teleaalth discussions are great and I just feel heard. Well, I think there are are two ways you could go about it. You could keep your traditional health insurance going and try it out. Um because I think from the very get-go, you're going to be very impressed by the transparency you see here. Or you could be like me and ditch the entire health insurance industry and I'm giving myself at least a a year to get a handle on the root causes. And I may go back to traditional health insurance, but I may not. What is something that you can do now that you weren't able to before you started? Well, I sleep better. Obviously, I've I've lost weight. I am getting healthier because uh the exercise, the supplements. I just feel like a lot of the things that happen uh for a woman my age going, you know, being menopausal, um there's not a whole lot of talk about it in in traditional medicine. It's kind of well, this is the how it is and deal with it. But when you start to understand the almost the chemistry behind it or you know the biology behind it, um I just feel like I I understand my body better now. How would those close to you describe the differences they might have seen or be seeing in me? Relieved, I would say. You know, every time I would come home from my PCP, I was just always really frustrated. I would say that I'm more excited to be a participant in my own health. I would say that would probably be the biggest thing. And I get excited to recommend this type of health model to other people um when I hear them kind of complain about not getting the answers they need and I get really excited to uh promote Med Matrix. All right. What has surprised you most since you started? confidence, I would say, knowing that I took control that that I decided that the system was broke and I was going to try something different. What were your health goals or concerns when you started? So, the the biggest uh two would probably be uh weight management and menopausal symptoms. It's only been three months, though. I'm still on a on a weight loss journey. um happy so far. Um and as far as the the menopausal also again still taking the supplements and um but feeling improvement uh feeling more clarity just a little bit more like myself 10 years ago. You know, it's always a little little nerve-wracking to establish a new relationship with a healthc care provider, but I felt really uh comfortable. I think the advantage of tellaalth for you know especially if you have a busy lifestyle that's that's great but then also you get to come into the office everyone is just uh very professional and and just really patient and they know they know you're here to be to be a partner like I said I do encourage others that have my same complaints to to try this out anytime the labs come in I you know I'm I'm pretty interested in that kind of stuff anyway Anyway, um but the labs having everything kind of in your in your portal makes everything awesome because if you forget what was said during a telealth meeting, you can go back and and you know refresh your memory.
