What Is Functional Medicine and Why It's Changing Healthcare
IFM Certified Practitioner · Yale MMSc · Updated June 10, 2026

You've been to the doctor. Maybe several. You've described the fatigue, the brain fog, the weight that crept on and won't leave. The joint stiffness that showed up in your late thirties and never went away. The gut issues that make every meal feel like a gamble.
And you've heard some version of the same response: "Your labs look normal. Here's a prescription. Follow up in six months."
That 15-minute appointment where nobody asked about your sleep, your stress, your diet, or what changed in your life right before the symptoms started? That's the standard model. It's built to manage disease after it arrives. Not to figure out why you feel terrible when nothing on a basic blood panel is flagged.
Functional medicine works differently. And for the 3,000+ patients we've treated at Med Matrix in South Portland, Maine, that difference has changed how they feel, function, and live.
What Functional Medicine Actually Is
Functional medicine is a clinical approach that focuses on finding and treating root causes, not just managing symptoms. Instead of asking "What drug matches this diagnosis?", it asks "Why is this happening in this specific person?"
That question changes everything.
Two patients can walk in with the same complaint (fatigue, for example) and leave with completely different treatment plans. One might have undertreated Hashimoto's because their doctor only checked TSH and never ran free T3, free T4, or thyroid antibodies. The other might have tanked vitamin D, chronic inflammation from food sensitivities, and cortisol patterns that crash every afternoon.
Same symptom. Different causes. Different solutions. That's the whole point.
Functional medicine uses detailed lab work, health history, lifestyle factors, and time with your provider to build a picture of what's actually happening inside your body. Then it addresses those findings with a combination of nutrition, targeted supplementation, hormone optimization, lifestyle changes, and medical therapies when needed.
How It's Different from Conventional Medicine
Conventional medicine is excellent at acute care. Broken bones, infections, emergencies, surgery. Nobody's debating that.
Where it falls short is chronic, complex conditions. The ones that develop slowly over years. The ones where you feel lousy but your basic labs come back "within range." The ones where you leave the appointment with a prescription but no explanation.
Here's a practical example. A patient comes in with high blood pressure. In a conventional visit, they get a prescription for a blood pressure medication. Maybe a suggestion to reduce salt. Visit over.
In a functional medicine visit, we're asking: What's driving the blood pressure? Is it insulin resistance? Chronic stress and elevated cortisol? Magnesium deficiency? Sleep apnea? Inflammatory markers that point to vascular damage? The answer changes the treatment. And it often means the patient can address the actual cause rather than taking a pill that manages a number without fixing the problem underneath.
A few key differences in how care looks:
- Conventional visits average 15 minutes. Our provider consultations are 60 minutes.
- Standard blood panels check a handful of markers. We run 80+ biomarkers to see the full picture.
- Conventional care is often reactive (wait until you're sick enough to treat). Functional medicine is proactive (find problems early, before they become diagnoses).
- Insurance-based practices are constrained by what insurance covers. We're not limited by that. HSA and FSA are accepted, but we don't work within the insurance model that restricts what gets tested and how much time your provider spends with you.
"Normal" vs. Optimal: Why Your Labs Can Look Fine When You Feel Terrible
This is one of the biggest frustrations patients bring to us. They feel awful. They know something is wrong. But their doctor says their labs are normal.
The problem is that "normal" lab ranges are based on population averages, including people who are already unhealthy. A TSH of 4.0 is technically "within range." But it's nowhere near optimal for most people, and it can come with fatigue, weight gain, cold hands, and brain fog that makes you feel like you're wading through mud all day.
We use optimal ranges, not just reference ranges. Checking TSH alone and calling it a thyroid panel is like checking the oil light and saying the engine is fine. We run the full panel: TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. That gives us the real story.
Same approach for everything else. Fasting insulin (not just fasting glucose), a full lipid breakdown (not just total cholesterol), inflammatory markers like CRP and homocysteine, vitamin D, B12, magnesium, ferritin, and hormones across the board. The 80+ biomarker panel we run on every new patient catches things that standard blood work misses every day.
What Happens When You Come In
The process at Med Matrix follows five steps. It's designed to be thorough without being overwhelming.
Free discovery call. You talk with a patient coordinator about what you're experiencing, what you've tried, and what you're hoping to address. No cost, no pressure. It's a conversation to see if functional medicine makes sense for your situation.
80+ biomarker test and full body scan. Your first in-office visit includes a blood draw covering 80+ markers plus an InBody body composition scan that measures lean mass, body fat, visceral fat, and hydration. You also fill out detailed health questionnaires about symptoms, history, and lifestyle.
Medical team reviews everything. Your provider reviews your labs, health history, and questionnaire responses before your consultation. They cross-reference your symptoms with biomarker patterns and identify what's actually driving how you feel.
60-minute provider consultation. A full hour with your provider. Not 15 minutes. Not a nurse reading off a chart. You sit down, go through every result in detail, and build a personalized plan together. If something needs treatment, you understand exactly why.
Ongoing support and progress. Follow-up labs track what's improving and what needs adjusting. Your plan evolves as your body responds. You have direct access to your care team between visits.
Conditions Where Functional Medicine Makes the Biggest Difference
We see patients across a wide range of conditions, but certain patterns come up over and over. These are the ones where conventional medicine tends to miss the mark and functional medicine finds answers:
- Fatigue that doesn't improve with more sleep or caffeine
- Thyroid and adrenal dysfunction that was never properly tested
- Weight gain that won't respond to diet and exercise alone
- Hormonal imbalances in both men and women
- Autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto's, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis
- Chronic joint pain and inflammation
- Gut problems: bloating, IBS, food sensitivities, SIBO
- Sleep issues that no amount of melatonin fixes
- Brain fog, memory problems, and declining mental sharpness
Most patients who come to us have already tried the conventional route. They're not here because they didn't give their doctor a fair shot. They're here because that approach didn't get them answers.
What Functional Medicine Is Not
It's not anti-medicine. We're not telling anyone to throw out their prescriptions or avoid their cardiologist. Several of our 7 providers have backgrounds in conventional medicine. The difference is that we're willing to look deeper, spend more time, and treat the person rather than the lab value.
It's also not a quick fix. If someone tells you they can fix a decade of health decline in two weeks, walk away. Real improvement takes time, consistent effort, and a willingness to change the habits that contributed to where you are now. What we can do is give you a clear, data-backed picture of what's going on and a specific plan to address it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Med Matrix accept insurance?
No. We don't accept insurance directly, and that's by design. Insurance dictates what gets tested, how long your appointment is, and what treatments are covered. We'd rather give every patient 80+ biomarkers, a 60-minute consultation, and a plan built around their actual needs. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
Where is Med Matrix located?
South Portland, Maine. We serve patients from throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
How is this different from naturopathic medicine?
There's overlap, but functional medicine is its own clinical framework. It uses conventional lab testing and diagnostics alongside nutritional, hormonal, and lifestyle interventions. Our providers include MDs, DOs, PAs, and other licensed clinicians trained in functional medicine methodology.
What if I'm already seeing a specialist?
That's fine. Many of our patients still see their PCP or specialist for specific conditions. Functional medicine doesn't replace those relationships. It fills the gaps they leave, especially around testing, root-cause investigation, and the time spent understanding your full health picture.
If you've been told your labs are normal but you know something isn't right, a 15-minute phone call can help you figure out whether functional medicine fits. Schedule a free discovery call and talk it through with our team. No commitment, no sales pitch.
