Finding a Weight Loss Clinic in Maine That Looks at the Whole Picture - Med Matrix functional medicine blog

You've Tried Everything. The Weight Won't Move.

You've done the calorie counting. The meal prep. The gym five days a week. Maybe you've tried keto, intermittent fasting, or one of those medically supervised shake programs. You lose 10 pounds, then gain 12 back.

Every doctor you talk to says the same thing: eat less, move more. As if you haven't been doing exactly that.

If willpower and discipline were the problem, you'd be at your goal weight already. You're not lacking effort. You're lacking answers.

Why Most Weight Loss Programs Don't Work Long-Term

Most weight loss clinics in Maine (and everywhere else) treat weight as a math problem. Calories in, calories out. Eat this meal plan. Take this supplement. Here's a prescription for phentermine. See you in a month.

That approach ignores the reasons your body is holding onto weight in the first place. And there are real, biological reasons.

  • Insulin resistance (your cells can't absorb glucose properly, so your body stores it as fat)
  • Thyroid dysfunction (your metabolic engine is running slow)
  • Cortisol imbalance (chronic stress tells your body to store fat, especially around your midsection)
  • Sex hormone deficiency (low testosterone in men, estrogen or progesterone shifts in women)
  • Systemic inflammation (driven by gut issues, food sensitivities, or chronic infections)
  • Leptin resistance (your hunger and fullness signals are broken)

Until someone identifies which of these is affecting you, no amount of broccoli and burpees is going to fix it. That's not pessimism. That's biology.

What We Do Differently

At Med Matrix in South Portland, we start where other clinics skip: the lab work.

Our 80+ biomarker panel tests everything that affects weight. Fasting insulin (not just glucose). Full thyroid panel. Sex hormones. Inflammatory markers. Cortisol. Vitamin and mineral levels. Liver function. Lipid particle size. A full body composition scan that shows muscle mass, visceral fat, and hydration at the cellular level.

Your provider then spends a full 60 minutes reviewing every result with you. Not a nurse. Not a quick phone call. A full hour with a provider who has already studied your labs and health history before you sit down.

The treatment plan comes from what the data actually shows. Not a template. Not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

The Tools We Use

Depending on what your labs reveal, your plan might include some or all of these:

Hormone Optimization

Hormones control metabolism, appetite, fat storage, and muscle retention. When they're off, weight loss becomes biologically difficult. TRT for men with low testosterone. HRT for women in perimenopause or postmenopause. Thyroid optimization for patients whose TSH looks "fine" but whose free T3 tells a different story.

We monitor hormone levels closely and adjust as your body responds. The goal is optimal, not just "in range."

Semaglutide and Tirzepatide

Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro) are GLP-1 receptor agonists that reduce appetite, improve blood sugar regulation, and support significant weight loss. But they work best when paired with the right nutrition, hormone support, and monitoring.

We prescribe these medications when they're clinically appropriate and combine them with everything else in the plan, so the weight stays off when you eventually stop.

Nutrition That Works With Your Biology

We don't hand you a generic meal plan. Based on your labs, body composition, and metabolic markers, our team builds a nutrition strategy around your specific needs. Protein targets. Carb tolerance. Meal timing. Foods that reduce your inflammation versus foods that drive it.

Peptide Therapy

Beyond GLP-1 medications, certain peptides support growth hormone production, fat metabolism, and cellular repair. Sermorelin, for example, stimulates your body's own growth hormone release, which supports lean muscle and fat loss.

IV Nutrient Therapy

Nutrient deficiencies slow everything down. When you're depleted in B vitamins, magnesium, vitamin D, or amino acids, your metabolism can't function efficiently. IV therapy replenishes these directly, bypassing gut absorption issues.

What Patients Actually Lose (And Gain)

Weight loss is the obvious goal. But what patients tell us matters more is what comes with it.

Energy. Mental clarity. Better sleep. Clothes fitting differently. Being able to play with their kids without getting winded. Not thinking about food constantly. Feeling in control of their body for the first time in years.

We've treated over 3,000 patients at our clinic, and weight loss is one of the most common reasons people walk through the door. When you address the underlying biology, the weight responds. And it stays off because you're treating the cause, not just the symptom.

What We Don't Do

We don't accept insurance. That's worth saying upfront. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and our team can walk you through costs before you commit to anything.

We also don't do quick fixes. No crash diets. No appetite suppressants without lab work first. No "lose 30 pounds in 30 days" promises. If that's what you're looking for, we're not the right fit.

What we do is figure out why your body won't let go of the weight, fix what's broken, and build a sustainable plan you can maintain. That takes some time. But the results hold.
